What is skewness in statistics and probability
So you have been assigned homework on types of skewness and don’t know how to deal with it right?
If you are facing a lot of problems in doing your homework then read this article as we will be giving a short tip that you can make use of to earn a good grade each time.
But before that, we will be discussing skewness and its types.
The statistics theory and probability a measure of skewness is defined as a measure of the asymmetry of the random variable or a date set. It is represented graphically showing the distribution of the data values in a data set.
Being graphical gives us an idea of how the mean, median, and mode are distributed within the values of a data set.
Skewness can be zero or symmetric, positive and negative.
It is important because its graphical representation gives us an idea of the frequency levels of the mean, median, and mode. It also gives us an idea of some basic observations.
Three types of skewness curves are possible for all types of data sets in statistics. They are-
Positive skewness
Negative skewness and,
Symmetric skewness
Here we will give you a brief idea of all three types of skewness. So let’s begin-
A curve or the data points of a random variable when represented on a curve is said to have positive skewness when the mean is greater than the median which is again greater than the mode.
When represented by way of a histogram or a frequency polygon we will see that the right tail of the curve is significantly taller and broader than the left tail of the curve.
The coefficient for positive skewness is always positive.
The curve or the data points for a random variable is said to have negative skewness when the mode is the highest followed by the median and mean.
It is exactly opposite to the positive skewness in the fact that the left tail of the curve is significantly larger and broader than the right tail of the curve.
The coefficient for negative skewness is always negative.
This is a perfect type of symmetric distribution as the values of mean, median, and mode are exactly aligned on top of each other and forms a normal to the curve.
Here the values of mean, median, and the mode are exactly equal. The right part of the curve is exactly equal in area to the left part of the curve.
Here the coefficient of skewness is always zero.
We know that you might still be having some problems in understanding the types of skewness. This is one of the toughest but basic concepts that is used in statistics and probability.
